This material may be classified as soft or hardwood. The first comes mainly from evergreen trees that grow fast and don’t have such dense grain as hardwood. Different types of furniture are made of hardwood or softwood. But in the kitchen hardwood or bamboo is preferred due to their durability, moisture resistance and other favourable features.

Materials used for wooden kitchen doors

We use three types of materials to create our wooden kitchen doors:

Plywood is a high-quality engineered wood. In our store, we use ash, oak and birch plywood. Ash and oak are used for the outermost layer. We also use beech to make IKEA Bestå legs.

There are some advantages and disadvantages of various types of wooden products. Some types of wood, like oak, shouldn’t be painted with spray paint. You can choose stain instead. It will emphasize wood veins and preserve the natural structure.

MDF board is made of hardwood and softwood fibres glued with wax and resin and pressed at high temperatures. It is still quite durable and a more affordable material than plywood or solid wood. MDF has a soft surface, which makes it easier to paint. It is a little less pressure resistant.

Bamboo is not wood in a strict sense. It is a kind of grass but after lignification, it is as hard and durable as a wooden material. There are some benefits from it being grass. It grows much faster than trees, and you don’t have to remove all the plants to harvest raw material. That’s why it is considered one of the most environment-friendly products in the furniture industry. For our bamboo kitchen furniture, we use compressed bamboo. It is a good replacement for a natural-looking wooden kitchen.

How to find a perfect colour?

As mentioned earlier, not every kind of wood is good to cover with opaque paint. We offer painting for beech legs and ash veneer. There is also no problem with painting the MDF board in any colour you choose. As for oak wood, it can be stained or treated with a clear lacquer. Bamboo IKEA custom fronts are made in two natural versions: bright “yellowish” Natural and a little darker Caramel. Besides these two exceptions, we can paint most of our wooden kitchen doors in any colour you like. So the only concern will be to choose the best fitting colour. We can give you some advice based on the newest trends for interior design. Pastel colours are favoured this season. Particularly if you don’t choose the most obvious combinations and add some geometric shapes. We don’t provide artistic painting of furniture, but you can always add something to our basic colour.

Another interesting trend is warm and a bit shaded white which looks very clean and is ideal for darker kitchens. White will look good in modern arrangements and a traditional shaker kitchen.

A muted dark red, called incarnadine, is also fashionable this season. You can have your wooden kitchen doors painted red and combine them with mint green or powder pink walls. What kind of wooden kitchen doors do we offer?

If you consider MDF, bamboo or wooden doors, our offer is wide ranged. If you want a natural-looking wood, perhaps left without paint or stained with visible grain, we have Nordic as one of the styles for the Bestå collection.

There are also some styles of wooden kitchen doors fitting the Metod furniture system. These are Nordic, Classic Max and Nordic Skyline. The last one is interesting due to its slatted surface, made of ash or oak veneer. This style can help you customize IKEA furniture in your kitchen. Remember that oak is not the best choice if you want the surface covered with paint.

Maybe you haven’t found the style you want among the options above. We have good news for you: there are even more options with the Nordic+ collection. There are four decoration styles to choose from, and all are wooden kitchen doors.

We can describe every style for you, but the best way to find the one that suits you is to browse and compare images. You can choose a simple “Basic” style with no decorations, “Circle” with a circular integrated grip in the top corner, “Elegance” with a bit decorative, rhomb-like indention at the top edge and “Instyle” with an indented straight line at the top edge.

Handles that match wooden kitchen doors

All wooden kitchen doors can be handleless. You need to install a fitting push-opener. But to customize even further your custom Bestå doors or any other door you’ve chosen, you can decorate it with a suitable handle. You don’t have to choose between the handle and handleless mechanism, because they are independent of each other. However, a handle or knob is necessary if you would not install a push-opener.

Wooden kitchen doors with visible wood veins will look amazing with matching wooden handles. But you can also choose metallic knobs or pulls and balance them with metallic tips on furniture legs.

Which wooden kitchen doors are the best?

The answer is not easy. It depends on many factors. If you ask about the material, we advise you to use bamboo or oak. Although all our products are treated with a lacquer which makes them more durable and moisture resistant, bamboo and oak are better than, for example, ash wood. Oak has a natural resistance against pests and fungi. It is an ideal material to use in rooms with high humidity.

That doesn’t mean that MDF or ash will be bad for the kitchen or will start to rot immediately. These are also very durable materials. Oak and bamboo are just a bit more moisture resistant.

How to adjust wooden doors to your cabinets?

When you order customized kitchen doors, we will prepare them for you. We are assuming that our customers don’t have to be construction experts. That’s why we provide all the elements and necessary instruction to make the assembly process easier. You will be able to adjust your cabinet doors using a screwdriver. The only thing you should bear in mind is that we don’t sell hinges with the doors. You will have to use your old hinges or buy them separately. Apart from that, all the parts are included in the final price of your order.

If you have a beautiful china set or a collection of exotic cups, you would probably prefer to show them off for your guests. It is one of many reasons you may want to install some transparent or semi-transparent doors. We provide two options, mesh and glass doors. The glass in our cabinet doors is translucent, so it gives a clear idea of what is inside your cabinet. It influences the overall appearance of your kitchen. Hanging wall cabinets with glass doors refer to a classic kitchen design. It also makes your furniture more interesting by breaking up the monotony of solid cabinet doors. The other option is more original. You can hide your dishware and sets behind a semi-transparent metal mesh.

Wooden kitchen doors make your kitchen look more natural and fresh. If you choose to leave them without paint or stain they are ideal for a strict, minimalistic style. You may also decorate them with paint or one of the our various handles.
