Cabinet doors with metal insert
IKEA furniture is popular for a reason. It joins modernity with tradition using simple features. You can design every interior using IKEA furniture or their replacements. One of the more interesting options is mesh doors instead of plain surfaces or glass. The cabinet door with a metal insert is stronger, more durable, and they look good in combination with other designs.
A cabinet door with a metal insert – what it is and where to use it?
There are many designs and materials used for IKEA kitchen cabinet fronts. Besides MDF and plywood doors, we can offer you a MDF cabinet doors with a metal insert. The mentioned metal insert contains of a metal mesh. It allows you to have semi-transparent cabinets and show a little bit of their content. Some people choose glass doors to show off their table ware, but mesh is an alternative worth trying. If you want your kitchen to look less monotonous, you can order these door fronts for some of your cabinets or even for all of them.
Diversify the upper and lower parts of your furniture
One way to use this design is to only use it for the upper cabinets in your kitchen. This way they resemble traditional china cabinets that lets you showcase your tableware. It can be a useful and an aesthetically pleasing option. But why only choose the top cabinets? One reason is that people tend to keep less attractive things in their lower cabinets. These are spacious storage spaces where we keep our pots, pans and bigger dishes. In upper cabinets, we usually have our china sets, glasses, mugs etc. These objects look very nice on display, and maybe more aesthetic than stacks of pots.
Another reason to use a metal mesh in upper cabinets is the amount of moisture that usually accumulates in the lower parts of the kitchen. You simply need to protect the cabinets content when you are mopping and sweeping the floor. A metal mesh may be more insufficient to protect from dust. This is not as problematic with top cabinets. You just have to dust from time to time, as with everywhere else.
Cabinet door with metal insert – pros and cons
Before you decide to use a cabinet door with a metal insert, it is always good to consider the advantages and disadvantages of this type of door. This will prevent you from making mistakes by misusing this kind of cabinet front.
Modern vs traditional look: cabinet doors for IKEA furniture with a mesh insert are generally perceived as traditional. Although it depends on the kind of design you choose for the entire furniture set. It resembles china cabinets with glass used in the 19th until the middle 20th centuries. With that kind of cabinet door, combined with the Classic Metod door fronts you can re-create the look of a traditional kitchen. Some people love this idea, others prefer something more modern and original.
We usually link the modern look with simple forms, smooth surfaces or integrated grips. You can customize some details to make a cabinet door with a metal insert look more modern. One way is to use a push-opener instead of handles. You can also combine mesh doors with other designs. A professional designer might call it postmodern – a style “conscious” of its cultural citations, merging various designs and elements in one place.
This type of cabinet door is definitely advantageous for traditional interiors, but you can also adjust it to modern ones.
Functionality: As mentioned before, a cabinet door with a metal mesh insert is great for top cabinets and may cause some problems when installed in lower sideboards. So, there are cons to using it for those types of cabinets. To avoid a problem with dust accumulating, you can place the cabinet on legs to separate the metal insert front further from the floor.
In terms of storage, these doors are as good as any. They are made of a MDF frame and with a metal insert. The insert makes the fronts a bit stronger than a simple MDF front, but both options are still equally durable in a kitchen that goes through everyday ware and tare. That’s why it is used rather for its aesthetic purposes. Mesh doors are, for sure, stronger and less prone to damage than glass doors. On the other hand, they don’t protect as well against dust and moisture. The perforated metal insert can also promote good ventilation, which can be ideal to protect against mould.
Mesh doors are good aesthetic additions to your kitchen furniture and they, more or less, have the same functionality as doors made of other materials. In some cases, it can be better to store things demanding better ventilation there. Cabinet doors with a metal insert works nice to present your table ware, show of your pantry organization and bring some variety to your kitchen design.
What about colour?
Our clients can decide colour as well as a gloss finish, which helps them to create real custom IKEA kitchen doors. The same paint is applied on the MDF frame as on the mesh insert. To choose colour, you can use one of our popular colours, displayed under the product specification or fill in your own colour code. We use NCS, Jotun and Farrow&Ball palettes. Just remember to add the full code name, since it indicates which palette it belongs to.
If you are not sure which colour will fit your interior best, you can always order a sample of painted MDF. It is a simple way to check how a given colour looks in a specific environment. This is also the best way to test different types of gloss. We offer three gloss finishes – semi-gloss, satin and matte. They can be applied on both natural wood veneer and painted MDF.
Choose between three different designs
We know that customization is all about choice and variety, that’s why we have prepared not only different colour options, but also three different designs for you to choose from. Here is a short characteristic of each and one of them:
Classic: This is the simplest design of the three. The frame surrounding the metal insert is made of MDF and prepared with Akzo Nobel lacquer. The 45° angle of the frame and the mesh insert is a nice option for a more rustic design. This design works great when creating a traditional kitchen look with shaker style cabinets. Especially if you choose wooden knobs as a balancing detail.
Classic Style: This design is a bit more modern and classy. The frame is still 7 cm wide like classic, but the angle is 90° instead of 45°. This gives the front a more modern, yet still traditional look.
Classic Max: This front is made with a solid ash frame together with the mesh detail. This front will still have the wooden texture of the ash on the frame, which gives it a nice industrial look together with the metal insert.
Last touches
To make your cabinets look even more beautiful, you can order additions such as plinth and décor strip. They are delivered in the same colour as the rest of your cabinet fronts. The plinth is also available to get in brass.
The standard length of the décor strip is 2.4 meters. It is cut down to fit the cabinet size upon assembly.
Cabinet door with metal insert outside of the kitchen
Doors with mesh inserts look great in kitchen. They are created with kitchen cabinets in mind. However, you can use them in other rooms if you want. It depends where you place it. If you have an open kitchen merged with a living room, this is a great occasion to present your china set to more guests. Mesh doors can look great as storage in both living rooms and hallways. It depends on the style you choose for your interiors.
You can assemble it by yourself
As with any IKEA furniture, our replacements are adapted to self-assembly. After ordering a customized product, delivery will take a few weeks. Once you have received your products, then all you have to do is remove the old door and install the new one. Prepare a screwdriver (it may be electric). You don’t need any specialistic tools besides that.
Remember that our doors are not delivered with hinges. You will have to use old ones from your previous door or buy them separately. Except that, all the parts are packed with your products and prepared for self-assembly.
On our side, the preparation time for mesh and glass doors is estimated for 6-8 weeks. Then add some extra time for transport as we send your order form Norway.
