5 Common Mistakes When It Comes To Interior Design
We’re all guilty of wanting the very best for our home and even sometimes getting carried away with what is on offer and overfilling each room and while making mistakes is all part of the interior design process, some can be easily avoided. Being aware of these mistakes, however, is the perfect way to make the most of the space that you have. Read our guide, below.
#1 Over Filling The Room
When decorating my home, I did more and more research into how I could create a space that not only looks great but is welcoming. In doing this, I found that one of the most common mistakes made by many when redesigning a room is overfilling the room. Whether this is placing too many decorative cushions on the sofa or buying the wrong sized wardrobe for your guest bedroom, it can dramatically reduce the space. Instead, consider how smaller, subtle decorations could uplift the room.
#2 Not Utilising Natural Light
Another common mistake is blocking out the natural light. When it came to designing my living room, I began to look into the use of natural light. With a sliding door and a large window leading out into the back garden, there was no real need for lighting until the evening. Due to this, I opted for cream walls to reflect the light that was already available and paired this with a brown 3-piece sofa set. Not only did this compliment the dark wood used in the cabinets, but it also helped to add depth to the room.
When choosing the flooring, I found that it was important to pick a light colour as a dark coloured flooring of any kind would absorb the natural light and restrict the amount that is let into the room.
#3 Spending Too Much
Something else that we are all guilty of is overspending. Whether this is spending money on luxury items or even paying too much for some of the smaller accessories to add into the room such as sideboards. I was guilty of this when I first started the task of redesigning my home as I would often opt for the first item that I liked without shopping around first. To avoid overspending, look around before making a purchase. You may find the same item for less elsewhere!
#4 Creating Too Much Space
Although the minimalistic look is one that is favoured by many, people often overboard and create a room with too much spare space. Most of the time, we have a tendency to take the furniture that they have and place it against the walls. When creating my living room space, I decided to bring the armchairs and sofa closer together to not only pull the room together but to make it feel more homely.
#5 Wrong Sized Furniture
The last mistake that I made when designing my space is that the furniture was much too large for the room. Although it may be tempting to buy a large L shaped sofa, it can make a room feel cramped, leading to the space looking cluttered. I was guilty of this when furniture shopping as it was all too tempting to buy a set of beanbags or an extra chair for the corner of the room. However, I found that sticking to the amount I needed and adding small finishing touches such as handles and decorations to the top not only saved me money but also helped to ensure my room looked the way I had imagined.
With all this in mind, you can create the home of your dreams by actively avoiding each of the mistakes listed above. Don’t be influenced by what the latest fashion is, know what you like and incorporate it into your home!
