5 Things I Learnt When Redesigning My Kitchen Space
Redesigning my kitchen space was an entirely new experience for me. Not only were there several decisions to make such as the colour theme and placement of appliances, but we also had to consider smaller, more intricate, elements such as handles. Now that the process is finally complete, I would like to share what I have learnt with you to help you achieve your dream kitchen.
Plan Before You Begin
Before we began removing the old kitchen, my other half and I set about identifying what we needed from the space. This was a crucial step in the designing process as it allowed us to see what we used regularly and refine where we would like everything to be placed. One of the main issues we faced was the location of the refrigerator. This was due to the door of the fridge blocking the corridor and restricting those that wanted to walk through the house. We knew that this along with the positioning of the other appliances will need to be altered to ensure that we made the most of the space we have.
Colour Is Important
Once we had a floor plan of what we wanted the room to look like, it came down to picking the colour of the Method style kitchen fronts. We began to look at all the options that were available and decided upon a bamboo front to match the wood of the cabinets. This natural grain was the perfect choice for our space as it perfectly complemented the grey countertop that we had chosen. During this process, we found that the colour of the cabinets helped to ensure that there was an adequate amount of natural lighting in the room which creates a welcome environment and a central hub to our home.
Positioning Of Appliances Is Key
When we put the new kitchen in, we found that positioning the appliances depended heavily on the electrics. We decided to place the fridge along the far wall of the kitchen as this created the space needed for others to move freely around the house. We then moved the oven to along the right-hand wall as it was the perfect distance from the fridge and still provided us with the countertop space we needed for the microwave and kettle.
Use Natural Lighting
When the appliances and worktops were in, we soon found that the amount of natural light in the room was perfect, but the window looked rather bare. In order to combat this, we placed a natural wooden blind over the window as this perfectly complimented the fronts without taking away from the rest of the room which allowed us to create a modern space that still felt lived in.
Utilise The Space
The final aspect that I learnt during this process is to utilise the space that we had. We not only added corner cupboards to help provide storage for mugs and various herbs and spices, but we also added some shelves to store cookbooks and to turn the modern room into a kitchen that we would love to cook in.
Through this experience, I learnt several valuable lessons about how to make the perfect kitchen for my home and how to make the space not only look bigger but work in a more practical way. I hope this helps you to do the same!
